How to Create a Magical Mastermind Experience That Lasts

Have you ever wondered what separates a thriving, long-lasting mastermind from just another group coaching program? As course creators, we’re always looking for ways to support our clients’ growth and build unforgettable communities—but masterminds are a whole different level of connection and transformation.

Tina Tower shares her secrets to building masterminds people never want to leave on Episode 283 of the Her Empire Builder Show. Here’s your guide to creating not just a program, but a truly magical mastermind experience.

Membership vs. Mastermind: What’s the Real Difference?

Before you build a mastermind, it’s critical to understand where it fits in your offer suite. According to Tina, the difference comes down to scalability and intimacy. Memberships can be high-volume with lower touchpoints—think group coaching, larger community calls, and less individual attention. Masterminds, on the other hand, are intentionally smaller, higher-priced, and all about deep connection and transformation, often including one-on-one or small group experiences.

Tina shared how her own Her Empire Builder program evolved from a mastermind into a membership as it grew beyond 100 members. She then reserved the intimate mastermind experience for smaller groups—a decision that kept the sense of magic alive.

Designing Your Mastermind: Purpose is Everything

Whether you want to create a space for peer-to-peer support, strategy sessions, deep connection, or all of the above, be clear on your mastermind’s purpose from day one. Tina runs two distinct masterminds: one is information-rich with regular live sessions and small group accountability, and the other is peer-led, focusing on high-level business owners discussing advanced strategy and life integration.

Ask yourself:

  • Who is this mastermind for? (Get crystal clear on your “hell yes” client.)
  • What will make their experience extraordinary?
  • Is there a subset of your audience that isn’t fully served by your other products?

Curate your community with an application process to ensure the group gels. “You want to get really clear on who is your hell yes client,” says Tina, “because when you get that group together, magic absolutely happens.”

Unforgettable Live Experiences

Virtual is great, but nothing compares to the connections built at live events. Tina goes the extra mile—surveying participants for personal favorites, surprising them with their preferred snacks and drinks, and adding special touches like personalized pajamas at retreats. Attention to these details makes members feel truly seen and valued.

Don’t forget to schedule enough downtime at events; true transformation often happens in the “in-between” moments, by the pool or over a quiet lunch, not just during jam-packed sessions.

The Power of Psychological Safety and Privacy

Transformational masterminds require trust. Tina never records mastermind calls to preserve privacy and encourage open sharing. “If people don’t feel safe, they’ll never share,” she explains. Make psychological safety a priority—what happens in the mastermind, stays in the mastermind.

Continuous Connection, Collaboration, and Celebration

The magic isn’t just in the meetings. Use apps like Voxer or Slack for ongoing support and encouragement between calls and events. Facilitate collaborations and long-lasting friendships; celebrate wins, growth, and milestones—both privately and publicly.

Tina’s final reminder: “People are coming to your mastermind for you—but they’ll stay for the community.” Set the tone through your energy and values, and watch as a vibrant network flourishes long after your program ends.
